A Length of Indigo Dyed Cotton Shibori: Rising Steam Motif
early to mid twentieth century
57" x 12 3/4", 145 cm x 32.5 cm
This dark indigo toned length of cotton shibori shows an interesting variation on the tatewaku or so-called "rising steam" pattern, a traditional design which is based on undulating, vertically-oriented parallel lines.
This one seems to indicate sprouting vegetation, the small "curls" that appear inside the pattern suggest new vegetal growth, perfect for the spring season we are enjoying now.
This length was taken from a yukata or an unlined, casual cotton kimono and as such there are ingrained creases which bear witness to its former life as a garment.
The design is a charming take on the traditional tatewaku design and the condition of the cloth is very good, used and with no obvious stains or holes.
