A Length of Indigo Dyed Cotton Egasuri: Large Scale Abstract Patterns
early twentieth century
54" x 13 1/2", 137 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton that is both striped in two tones of blue. It is embedded with weft-directional woven abstract kasuri designs.
The designs are geometric in nature: three stacked diamonds or interlocking zigzags are interspersed with three sets of two pairs of white horizontal bars.
The length is faded overall and shows a faint surface patina from wear, likewise the indigo has oxidized to a dullish, grey-blue tone, quite attractive.
The length is hand woven and is seemingly of hand spun cotton yarns, its bold-yet-subtle pattern has a striking visual appeal.
