A Length of Hinode Shibori: Sunrise Motif

$70.00 USD

early twentieth century
42" x 13", 106.5 cm x 33 cm

This length of indigo dyed cotton shibori cloth shows what is known as the hinode or "sunrise" pattern, a fairly identifiable one of the thousands of designs and variants that were developed in Japan's "shibori capital" towns of Narumi and Arimatsu.

This length was taken from a yukata or an unlined summer kimono--it also seems to be one of the two ends of the bolts of cloth it was taken from.

The pattern itself is everything you would expect to see in hinode shibori in terms of scale, size and rendering. The overall condition is good and used, the indigo tone is dark and rich and the undyed areas are still fairly clear.

This is a really lovely length of cloth showing a classic shibori pattern from the heart of shibori production in Japan.
