A Length of Hand Woven Striped Cotton: Even Pattern
$40.00 USD
early twentieth century
68" x 13 1/4", 173 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a length of understated beauty: hand woven striped cotton from old Japan.
The warp yarns are in equal widths of indigo, white and coral, the coral color no doubt being dyed in safflower.
The weft yarns are indigo cotton so the overall color effect is a muted, darkened version of the colors used as warp yarns.
This is the kind of country textile that might be overlooked because it lacks bells and whistles. But embedded in this simplicity is a kind of visual sophistication that we ask of Japanese design and which is delivered here.
