A Length of Hand Woven Kasuri Cotton: Traditional Well Crib Pattern

$80.00 USD

early twentieth century
59 1/2" x 13 3/4", 151 cm x 35 cm

This is length of dark toned--is it blue or black?--hand woven kasuri dyed cotton that shows a repeat pattern of the traditional well crib design that, at the center of the length, is slightly (charmingly) misaligned.

The selvedge is ragged and irregular due to the hand weaving of the warp and weft based well crib designs that are embedded in the cloth and make up the repeat pattern. The length is slightly bowed to the right.

It is unclear why the repeat pattern is not set on a perfect grid as most weaving is, however it is this irregularity that gives interest to the pattern and no doubt one schooled in weaving will understand why this is the case.

This length is of good weight and is tightly woven; its hand made qualities are very evident.
