A Length of Hand Woven Checked Cotton: Indigo Dye
ca. late nineteenth century
59" x 13", 150 cm x 33 cm
This is a very handsome length of old, hand loomed, indigo dyed cotton whose woven pattern is very simple: a white grid on a deep, blue colored background.
The length is composed of two pieces which are hand stitched together and on the surface there are about 6 mending patches from top to bottom.
A lovely length of cotton, with some surface wear and patina, this simply designed and executed piece of old hand loomed, indigo dyed cloth from Japan is simple and beautiful.
