A Length of Hand Spun Cotton: Resist Dyed Family Crest
mid to late nineteenth century
62" x 12 1/4", 157.5 cm x 31 cm
Aside from the large, half-family crest that has been resist dyed onto the cloth, the beauty of this length is also in its marvelously textured hand spun cotton yarns.
Hand spun yarn is a desirable feature of old Japanese folk textiles and one that should be sought out, if possible.
This length is supple in the hand and is dyed a difficult-to-describe dark tone that shows as a deep green color, more than likely indigo which was overdyed with yellow.
The half family crest is large-scale and in the undyed parts of it you will some faint discoloration which is consistent with the good age of this piece.
And again, it is the hand spun cotton yarns which make this length the luscious, old piece of cloth that has so much appeal.
