A Length of Hand Spun Cotton Cloth: Patched Plaid
late nineteenth century
56" x 13", 142 cm x 33 cm
This length of indigo dyed cotton is simply beautiful, in the literal sense of those words.
It is a beautiful length of cloth for its low-contrast indigo dyed plaid which is extremely restrained and handsome in its presentation.
What makes this simple length of hand woven cotton even better is the rich and beautiful hand spun cotton yarns that were used to weave this length: the feel of the cloth is soft and lush due to the hand spun yarns, and those of you who collect Japanese folk textiles know that hand spun cotton is very desirable in old cloth.
There is one really charming mending patch, pictured, and a small stain, also pictured in detail.
