A Length of Grey and Blue Toned Shibori: Diagonal Bands
early to mid twentieth century
56" x 13 1/2", 142.25 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of shibori dyed cotton of a simple and very attractive pattern.
The design is one of bands of grey and deep indigo diagonal lines that are embellished with stitched shibori. It has been said that this kind of grey and blue style shibori was made popular during the Taisho (1912-1926) and early Showa eras (1926-1989).
The length was taken from a yukata or an unlined summer kimono and as such there are ingrained creases from its former life as a garment as well as the most insignificant and almost imperceptible yellow cast to a zone on the length.
