A Length of Elegantly Colored Striped Cotton: Two Kasuri Patches
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
68" x 12 1/2", 173 cm x 31.5 cm
This length of very handsome, striped cloth is hand woven from hand spun cotton--and it is luxurious not just for its simply designed beauty but also for its hand made materials.
Without holding this length in your hand or seeing it in person it is difficult to describe the simple joy of seeing it.
The colors are handsome, earthy and sophisticated in their understatement and the design of woven stripes is straightforward.
The length displays two patches of large-scale kasuri cloth attached to the top and bottom, left-hand areas and these two patches provide a nice visual contrast to the rest of the length.
This is a very good length of cloth from old Japan, with a kind of color and texture that are exactly what you would want to find in a old folk textile.
Apologies for the poor quality of the image of the full length--on this photo the placement of the two patches can be seen.
Just beautiful.
