A Length of Egasuri: Shrimp in Ikat
$85.00 USD
early to mid twentieth century
62" x 12 1/2", 157.5 cm x 31.5 cm
This length of indigo dyed cotton shows a repeat pattern of weft-based, large scale kasuri shrimp that are woven against a background of vertical stripes.
Shrimp are a traditional Japanese design motif that indicates a wish for long life: as elderly people's bodies tend to bend over when they are very old, the depiction of shrimp conveys hope for longevity.
The length is hand stitched from two pieces of cloth and it is in good, used condition.
A lovely and charming length of cloth from old Japan.
