A Length of Egasuri or Picture Kasuri: Carp in Repeat Pattern
early twentieth century
62 1/2" x 13", 159 cm x 33 cm
This is a good sized length of indigo dyed cotton kasuri that shows a beautiful design based on a grid pattern. Placed alternately in the grid is an image of a jumping carp which is beautifully rendered in weft yarns.
The legend of the carp is a curious one and it is believed that if the carp has the audacity, courage and determination to jump up and over a rushing waterfall it will be magically transformed into the noble and mythical dragon.
These folk depictions of the carp as it leaps upward are delightfully realized.
Alternating with the image of these carps is that of a complex geometric pattern that is woven both from warp and weft yarns, quite an accomplishment. These abstract designs pair interestingly with the fairly realistic carp images.
The cotton is of fairly sturdy light weight and it is in good, used condition.
The length is rich in sparkling contrast of white and blue designs, it is hard not to be drawn into it.
