A Length of Egasuri: Cranes and Noshi
early to mid twentieth century
54" x 13 1/4", 137 cm x 33.5 cm
This is length of indigo dyed cotton egasuri or "picture kasuri" that shows a repeat pattern of auspicious motifs, that of the crane and of noshi.
The crane is a well-known traditional symbol of longevity and of marital harmony; the noshi, or strips of dried abalone, symbolize good fortune and are meant to convey good wishes.
The cotton is of a fairly sturdy weave and the woven images are folk-y in nature. The condition of the length is good/used and there is one small patched hole on the length, shown on the accompanying detail photograph.
A nice length of egasuri with a beautiful, woven message.
