A Length of Edo Period Boro Silk: Gorgeous Subdued Palette of Color Tones

$185.00 USD

mid nineteenth century
62 1/2" x 13 3/4", 159 cm x 36 cm

This length of super beautifully-toned silk boro cloth is so much more subtle and beautiful when seen in person than it is in these photos which (sadly) do not do the piece justice.

The rich layering of contrasting stripes, plaids and solids as shown here, and their wonderful naturally-dyed colors, is a joy to behold. Making it even more beautiful is the approximate age of this piece which would seem to be, must be, the mid nineteenth century.

Clearly this piece was made from a reconfigured kimono which was transformed into a futon cover. The length is starched.

And it is so handsome for its color palette and its arrangement of cloth within the narrow format of this panel that it becomes visually irresistible.

It is a beautiful length, much more beautiful than the photos here show. It is also fairly rare to find silk boro cloth, even rarer when it is of this esteemed age.

Recommended.
