A Length of Double Arashi Shibori: Pole Wrapped Hatching
early to mid twentieth century
61" x 13 1/2", 155 cm x 34 cm
What a beautiful length of indigo dyed shibori cotton.
This length is taken from a yukata, or an unlined, casual, summer kimono, and as such, it bears some ingrained creases from a lifetime of use.
The jagged and long, thin narrow lines going in two directions are the result of a shibori technique called arashi or storm shibori, as often arashi shibori is done on a diagonal and calls to mind hard-driving rain.
The lines are lovely in their unevenness--and please note that there are horizontal bars of fairly noticeable light fading to the length.
The color of the base of the cloth is of a dull, very light blue tone, it is not bright white.
Just lovely, and a beautiful shibori technique.
