A Length of Double Arashi Shibori: Indigo Dyed Cotton

$45.00 USD

early twentieth century
28 1/4" x 12 3/4", 71.75 cm x 32.5 cm

This is a very good piece of indigo dyed cotton shibori: the technique used to produce this complex pattern is a from of arashi shibori, arashi meaning storm, so the allusion of the pattern imprinted into this cloth is that of driving rain.

Many variations of arashi are based on strong diagonals.

The cotton seems not to be hand loomed, however the indigo is likely botanical, if not wholly, then in part.

Nicely patterned, with some charming "irregularities" to the arashi shibori this is a very good piece of hand made Arimatsu shibori cotton in good, used condition.

Please note a weakening of the cloth that has given way to a tear on the middle, left selvedge area, shown in a detail photo here. As well there are zones of light fading and an ingrained crease or two.

Beautiful.
