A Length of Deeply Toned Arashi Shibori: Storm Pattern
$80.00 USD
mid twentieth century
57" x 13 3/4", 145 cm x 35 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed shibori cotton that seems to be dyed in two different arashi methods.
The diagonal stripes are strong and concentrated along the length. Under them can be seen a diamondy sawtooth pattern: both the stripes and the diamonds are forms of arashi dyeing that use pole wrapping as an integral part of the dyeing process.
No doubt this cloth was made in Arimatsu/Narumi, the recognized shibori "capital" of Japan.
The length was taken from a yukata or an unlined, casual kimono.
