A Length of "Crepe" Cotton: Shirakage Shibori
early to mid twentieth century
48" x 13", 122 cm x 33 cm
This is a length of lightweight, "crepe" cotton that has very little body and is quite drapey and clingy: it has very little volume when twisted.
It is dyed in the shirakage shibori technique and we see a repeat pattern of the interlocking circles motif that has been punctuated by staggered columns of dark discs, each of which contains a rough diamond shape made of small, tied shibori circles.
There are a few small clusters of faint stains--hard to see--which have been illustrated on the detail photos presented.
This length was more than likely taken from a yukata which is an unlined, summer kimono.
Again, please be aware that this is not flat woven cotton, but a type that is clingy and thin.
