A Length of Complexly Designed Striped Cotton: Indigo Dyed
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
66" x 13 1/4", 167.5 cm x 33.5 cm
In the past, in Japan, stripes were abundantly seen on textiles, both those which were worn and those which were used in the home.
This is a particularly handsome striped cloth that shows a lovely combination of light-toned indigo against deep-toned indigo with intermittent, equally spaced columns of narrow, warp-based stripes.
This is a handsome length and it is in good, used condition, still very bright of tone.
It is a beautiful thing, a length taken from a futon cover, and one that demonstrates the care which was put in to designing striped cloth in old Japan.
