A Length of Complex Shibori: Two Layered Arashi Techniques

$95.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
54" x 13 /12", 137 cm x 34 cm

This length of dark toned, indigo dyed cotton cloth was taken from a yukata or an unlined, casual cotton kimono.

The field of shibori is dense and it was done in two arashi processes. Under the strong, diagonal lines we see the presence of a kind of arashi shibori that produces a sawtooth effect.

On the top, left selvedge area we see an area that was not dyed on the second dyeing of the cloth and this area acts as a window in to the layered shibori dyeing process.

The pattern of strong, diagonal lines that are overlaid on this sawtooth design was probably done with folding.

As can be see there are zones of light fading to this length but the overall impression is that of a strongly colored, deeply toned length of shibori cotton that is dyed in a complex set of techniques.

Wonderful.
