A Length of Complex Arashi Shibori: Arimatsu
mid twentieth century
56" x 13 1/2", 142 cm x 34.25 cm
This is a lovely piece of indigo dyed cotton shibori: the technique used to produce this complex pattern seems to be arashi shibori, arashi meaning storm.
When looking closely at the pattern there appears to be two techniques used to create it, a narrow, horizontal stripe over which is a kind of small, repeat of a diamond shape.
The cotton seems not to be hand loomed, however the indigo is likely botanical, if not wholly, then, in part. There are ingrained creases from its former life as a yukata or an unlined, casual kimono.
Rich in pattern, this is a stunning little piece of hand made Arimatsu shibori.
