A Length of Chidori Shibori: Horizontal Stripes

$75.00 USD

mid twentieth century
57" x 13 1/4", 145 cm x 33.5 cm

This is a length of nui shibori, or shibori that has been shape resist dyed using horizontal rows of stitching.

This kind of striped, stitched shibori is sometimes referred to as chidori shibori, possibly because the variegated lines appear to be the tracks left on wet sand by the plover, or chidori.

This length is taken from a yukata or an unlined summer kimono; as such, creases and some very slight, overall fading from wear can still be seen on this length. The cotton is machine loomed.

Shown here is a historical photo of a man wearing a yukata of chidori shibori: the image was taken from Ozu's classic 1953 film, Tokyo Story.

A lovely piece of handsome, hand made shibori.
