A Length of Boro Kaya: Star Shaped Stitched Mending
ca. early to mid twentieth century
76" x 12 1/2", 193 cm x 31.5 cm
This is a handsome and wonderful length of boro, rustic, over dyed indigo hemp cloth. This is a panel from a kaya or mosquito netting, hence the very loose, open weave of the cloth.
The color is a deep green which is a very true, pine needle green. The hemp yarns are wiry and have taken the dye in a slightly uneven fashion, which adds to the country appeal of this length.
There are three patches applied to this boro length--one is hemp, the remaining two are cotton. But what is rather remarkable about this boro cloth are the two "star shaped" stitched mendings which can be seen on the accompanying detail photos here. Their flower-like configuration is most unusual--and really delightful.
