A Length of Boro Kasuri Cotton: Three Brushy Motifs

$85.00 USD

early twentieth century
70 1/2" x 12 1/2", 179 cm x 31 cm

This is a length of kasuri dyed cotton that is composed of two pieces that are hand stitched together. The cotton is supple, soft to the touch and drapey in the hand; it has a beautiful texture.

The cloth shows three different patterns, each similar to one another and very possibly from a bolt of cloth that showed changing patterns along its length. One of the patterns shows an interesting crane/pine tree hybrid which, of course, conveys a wish for a long life as both the crane and the pine tree symbolize longevity.

There are four mending patches affixed to the surface, one of them long and narrow; it is placed on the left side of the length just above a section of missing selvedge.

Note the vertical lines are done using kasuri yarns and add a brushy or painterly quality to the overall look of the cloth.

This is beautiful!
