A Length of Boldly Designed Shibori: Chrysanthemums and Lattice
early twentieth century
39 3/4" x 13 1/4", 101 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a length of mid century shibori which uses a synthetic indigo on a machine loomed cotton and dyed onto the cotton length is a strong and graphic design showing a large repeat.
The pattern is that of stylized chrysanthemums set against a background of a strongly drawn, diagonally-oriented trellis.
The pattern is bold and striking from the top of the length to the bottom. The undyed areas of the lightweight cotton is a fairly clear white.
As this length was taken from a yukata which is a casual, unlined, cotton kimono, there are ingrained creases from its decades of use as such.
This is a wonderful pattern, with strong graphic appeal and an expertly rendered shibori in the stitched technique.
A delight for the eyes.
