A Length of Bold Striped Cotton: Subtle Color Shifts
early twentieth century
64" x 13 1/2", 162.5 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of hand spun, hand woven cotton cloth that shows a design of deeply toned indigo and green stripes.
The indigo shows in two tones and the green color is used judiciously, so much so that it is hard to identify at first glance: more than anything it is a color that is used to enrich the overall impression of the design.
The length is in good, used condition and its selvedges show that the cloth is handwoven, and the texture of the cotton yarns indicate they are hand spun. Each of these traits is what you want to find in a Japanese folk textile.
Simple and sophisticated.
