A Length of Beautifully Figured Kasuri Hemp or Ramie: Finest Quality

$75.00 USD

early twentieth century
63" x 13 1/4", 160 cm x 33.5 cm

This length of indigo dyed hemp or ramie cloth is extremely finely woven, and more than likely it comes from one of Japan's most heralded centers of asa or bast fiber weaving, present day Omi in Shiga prefecture.

Omi jofu, or the excellent quality hemp and ramie weaving from this place is well-known for its beautifully figured kasuri cloth, and this piece is a good example.

It shows a vertically-oriented repeat pattern of stylized flowers and languid streams which are highlighted by regularly place narrow flashes of undyed yarn.

In good, used condition, this length of cloth is still rich in an indigo blue tone and shows little evidence of wear.

Beautiful.
