A Length of Beautifully Colored Zanshi Ori: Pale Indigo
early twentieth century
58" x 12 1/2", 147 cm x 31.5 cm
This beautifully toned indigo dyed length shows a fairly large area of weaving done with leftover yarns or zanshi ori.
The weft on the proper bottom of this length is fed with random bits of coffered yarns that were saved for just this purpose and they provide a variegated look to the cloth.
The color is soft blue and is enhanced by the black warp yarns on more than half this length.
As is often the case with zanshi ori the warp is fixed and the weft is free-form: that said, and that being the case here, we see a very handsome stripe embedded into the cloth which makes a good foil for the leftover yarn passage at the bottom.
The length has a slight curve to it due to its age.
Good color, good age, very handsome.
