A Length of Beautifully Colored Striped Cotton: Hand Spun Yarns

$65.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
64 1/21" x 13 1/2", 164 cm x 34 cm

What a beautifully colored length of hand woven, hand spun cotton cloth. The pattern of stripes that is woven into the cloth is complex and the colors--white, pale blue, dark blue and a rich green--in the combination as presented here are super attractive.

The length is in good, used condition with all its colors still nice and rich; the length shows some wear which in keeping with a cloth of this age and of home manufacture.

Interesting to note that the Japanese word for stripe is shima, the same word as "island." It is thought that stripes in Japan were inspired by trade with foreign island countries such as Indonesia and the name shima was applied to striped cloth for that reason.
