A Length of Arashi Shibori: Narrow Horizontal Stripes

$45.00 USD

ca. mid twentieth century
51" x 13 1/2", 129.5 cm x 34 cm

What a beautiful length of indigo dyed shibori cotton.

This length is taken from a yukata, or an unlined, casual, summer kimono, and as such, it bears some ingrained creases from a lifetime of use.

The irregular, horizontal stripes are the result of a shibori technique called arashi or storm shibori, as often arashi shibori is done on a diagonal and calls to mind hard-driving rain.

The stripes are lovely in their unevenness and one can see clouds of stray dye and where the cotton was creased before the cloth was dyed.

Just lovely.
