What a beautiful length of indigo dyed shibori cotton.
This length is taken from a yukata, or an unlined, casual, summer kimono, and as such, it bears some ingrained creases from a lifetime of use.
The irregular, horizontal stripes are the result of a shibori technique called arashi or storm shibori, as oftenarashi shibori is done on a diagonal and calls to mind hard-driving rain.
The stripes are lovely in their unevenness and one can see clouds of stray dye and hiccups of undyed spots along the length. As well, one can see where the cotton was creased before the cloth was dyed. These creases may be a bit tough to iron out completely.
