A Length of 19th Century Sashiko Stitched Boro Cloth: Panel from a Yogi
ca. late nineteenth century
74" x 13 3/4", 188 cm x 34.75 cm
This is a really lovely length of indigo dyed boro cotton, the cotton yarns are most likely hand spun and the cloth is hand woven.
The length is composed of two, indigo dyed cotton lengths which are hand stitched together. On top of this deep indigo colored base cloth is a wide patch of striped cotton, the patch being beautifully sashiko stitched to the base cloth--and the subtle, weft-based stripes of this stitched fragment are beautifully rich in color and light fading.
Taken from a yogi, or an oversized, padded, sleeping kimono, this fragment is a wonderful piece of old Japan, more than likely woven during Japan's Meiji era (1868-1912).
Subtle and beautiful.
