A Layered Sashiko Stitched Textile: Each Side Different
mid twentieth century
26 1/2" x 12 1/2", 67 cm x 31.5 cm
This layered cloth is hand stitched from recycled cotton cloth. By looking at the type of old cotton used it seems it was taken from a kimono. Each of the two sides of this cloth is made from a slightly different, recycled old cotton.
The size and shape of this indicate that it might have been intended to be used as a diaper but it also could have been intended for another purpose.
The cotton cloth is attractive as is the simple sashiko stitching done in white thread: this provides a lovely contrast to the dark base cloth.
A charming piece with subtle details and very good, old cotton cloth.
