A Layered and Hand Repaired Rug-Weight Cloth: Recycled Cottons
early to mid twentieth century
49" x 36 1/2", 124.5 cm x 92.5 cm
This is a very handsome, good-sized piece-constructed cotton cloth which is entirely hand stitched from recycled cottons.
It is made with perhaps four layers of cotton so the textile is heavy, a throw or rug weight.
But it is its artful combination of dark blue indigo cotton versus the background of large-scale plaid that makes this home accessory such an interesting and visually beautiful cloth.
The placement of the dark cotton pieces on the plaid ground has a Modernist feel and one that is undeniably interesting to the eye.
With good wear and nice stitching, this is a wonderful and still usable textile from old Japan--and do not hesitate using it in the home.
