A Large Scale Kasuri Length: Checks and Arrow Feathers
ca. early twentieth century
67" x 13 1/2", 170 cm x 34 cm
This is a very handsome and very interesting length of indigo dyed cotton kasuri cloth, and one that merges two very distinct design ideas onto one cloth.
The "dark," indigo blue side of the cloth shows a repeat pattern of resist dyed, highly stylized yabane, a traditional arrow feather motif. The "brown" side of the cloth shows a lovely group of golden brown colored stripes that occasionally form a square of checks; this is acheived by slipping in resist dyed weft yarns at just the right spot, thus creating this wonderful checkerboard image.
A really gorgeous length of cotton: very sophisticated and a bit unusual.
