A Large Green Colored Patched Furoshiki: Lightweight Cotton
early to mid twentieth century
60" x 64", 152.5 cm x 162.5 cmÂ
This large pieced and patched cloth was hand stitched from what appears to be the lightweight lining fabrics of a kimono.
The construction is that of a furoshiki which is a square shaped cloth that is used to bundle, store or carry things--furoshiki are a staple part of Japanese life and they are still used in force all over the country.
This one has an attractive play of color. The predominant green tone against the purple colored patches of the same value makes for an alluring visual display. The progression of the patches along the center of the cloth suggests an abstracted landscape, if one is inclined to interpret form in that way.
It is worth noting once more that the cloth is lightweight and somewhat drapey in the hand and that this cloth can be used as a home accessory as easily as it can be used to admire as artwork.
Just lovely.
