A Large Daifukucho or Ledger Book: Bamboo Tabs
late nineteenth century
when closed: 14 1/2" x 6" x 3 1/2", 37 cm x 15.25 cm x 9 cm
This is a good-sized, beautifully battered and distressed old daifukucho, a hand bound, hand written book. It could have originally been used for inventories, for accounting, for ledgers or as a record of loans.
This one is particularly good for its thick density of old, mulberry fiber pages, its large size--and mostly for the many bamboo tabs that have been laminated into the pages of this book.
Its two covers show hand written kanji or Chinese characters--each of the two covers is quite worn.
This is a very good example of a traditional daifukucho, with its original, intact binding cord and with the beautiful addition of so many bamboo tabs.
