A Large Boro Zokin: Subtle Patterns

$23.00 USD

ca. mid twentieth century
12 1/2" x 15 1/4",  32.5 cm x 38.5 cm

This is a quite large, sashiko stitched cotton zokin, or dustcloth.

It has been assembled from four types of old, discarded, cotton cloth of dark colors: a narrow stripe, a small check, a printed kasuri type cloth and a dark neutral cloth for backing.

The cotton used to create this zokin is clearly re-used.  The entire zokin is covered in vertical rows of white, sashiko stitches.

The subtle play of pattern on pattern is just wonderful, as is the quite large size of this zokin, which could easily be used as a place mat.
