A Lacquer Maker's Work Accessory: Well-Used Low Stand
vearly twentieth century
2" x 16 1/4" x 10 3/4", 5 cm x 41 cm x 27.25 cm
This wonderful object is a low wooden stand that was used in a lacquer maker's studio.
The entire surface of the top of the stand is covered in drips and pools of red and black lacquer that have accrued over what must have been years of use.
More than likely the lacquer artisan placed his work on this low table either during the process of working on it or or in order to dry the pieces, however the former suggestion seems more likely.
The surface is textured from the accretion of lacquer drips and if one wishes to entertain prosaic thoughts, one can imagine that the unintended beauty of this humble piece is due to the exertion of the passage of time and the good work that this low stand held for decades.
This piece would be lovely to hang on a well-lit wall to admire its abstract expressionist-like beauty or it would function well as a home accessory, too.
Just beautiful.
