A Kasuri Length with Two Tabs: Hand Stitched
mid twentieth century
41 1/2" x 13", 105.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed, hand woven kasuri or ikat cotton. It is a panel taken from a koshimaki or a kind of half-slip worn under a kimono. The two, hand stitched tabs on top and bottom of the panel attest to its former life as a garment.
TheĀ koshimaki was seemingly never worn as there is no visible wear to this length.
The type of kasuri, the spare warp and weft white dashes, seem to be of a type that was woven in Yamagata prefecture where this kind of wispy kasuri is often seen.
It is a very handsome length of old cloth, beautiful in design and execution.
