A Home Made Stitching Instruction Book: "Basic Stitches"
ca. mid twentieth century
13 leaves, each approximately: 3 1/2" x 7 1/4", 9 cm x 18.25 cm
This is an utterly charming, home made book. It shows leaf after leaf of hand sewn "basic stitches," the stitching obviously done by a young girl who is being taught the essentials of sewing.
In the book you will see all sorts of simple stitching--and for those of you who have examined old, Japanese futonji or garments, you will notice many of these stitches from your studies of old cloth.
The book's "pages" are of white cotton; the practice stitching is done in red threads. The name of the stitch or its technique is hand lettered in ink.
A really charming--and valuable--document from days gone by.
Just delightful--and recommended.
