A Hemp or Ramie Length of Summer Cloth: Resist Dyed
early to mid twentieth century
50" x 13", 127 cm x 33 cm
This is a beautifully colored and designed length of hemp or ramie cloth that has been resist dyed to show a lovely pattern of tall, grassy flowers.
The pale blue color is cooling to the eye which is important as this was probably taken from summer bedding. The design, with its long, lazy lines and its languid appearance also gives a breezy feel which is important to see when you are experiencing an otherwise hot and humid Japanese summer.
There are some ingrained creases to this piece as well as some faint stains which are shown on the accompanying detail photos: the stains are not terribly obvious when looking at this length as a whole.
A really beautifully realized length of resist dyed asa cloth.
