A Hank of Hand Made Rope: Plaited Rags

$135.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
as shown: 18" x 6" x 4", 46 cm x 15 cm x 10 cm

This nicely wound hank of home made rope is braided from long scraps of recycled cotton cloth--and the rope was used hard.

Imagine your own old, clothing and bedding; this is the source of the materials seen in this plaited rope. It was used for everyday tasks in old Japan, from tying goods for hauling them to any number of other jobs.

The rope was used hard as is obvious from the rough condition and the discoloration to the cotton plaiting. There seems to be variety of commercially produced and hand loomed cottons that comprise it.

The effect is rustic--no surprise--and this kind of hand made rope is not very easy to find and has great appeal for those interested in Japanese rural textiles.

Recommended.
