A Hank of Hand Made Cotton Rope: Braided Rags

$165.00 USD

early twentieth century
as shown: 16" x 8" x 4 1/2", 40.5 cm x 20.25 cm x 11.5 cm

This generously sized hank of boro rope is braided from innumerable scraps of cotton cloth of various colors, tones and types.

Imagine scraps of ragged clothing and bedding that were exhausted by use and torn into lengths and braided togehter: this is the source of this hand made rope which was used for everyday tasks in old Japan, from tying goods for hauling to any number of other jobs.

The rope is fascinating to look at; the variety of commercially produced and hand loomed cottons that comprise it is just beautiful, and as a finished piece this length of old rope shows a good, varied color palette.

A very good length of hand made rope from old Japan.

Recommended.
