A Hand Stitched Cotton Kimono: Thin Wool Sleeve Details
early to mid twentieth century
47" x 46", 119.5 cm x 117 cm
This beautiful, piece-constructed cotton garment is either a woman's kimono or--more likely--a juban or an under-kimono.
It is completely hand stitched from three different types of cotton: two styles of kasuri and one plaid. A lightweight red-colored wool detail is added to each of the sleeves and there is some loss to this wool, evidence of moths.
The garment is in good, wearable condition. The cotton is still very strong and durable and it can certainly be worn without much worry.
There is some exhausted elastic at the end of each sleeve which can probably be removed or altered if so desired.
A lovely old kimono or juban and one that is still wearable.
