A Hand Hewn Repaired Wooden Korean Bowl: Beautiful Patched Repair
early twentieth century
4 3/4" x 15" diameter, 12 cm x 38 cm diameter
This beautiful, rustic bowl is hand hewn from one, large piece of wood.
By looking at the accompanying detail photographs which show all sides of this bowl, you can see that there are two crudely fashioned lug handles symmetrically positioned low on the sides of the bowl.
As well, it is clear from the roughed-up surface and the splits in the wood that this bowl had been used hard during its long life.
Prominently seen is the wonderful zinc or tin patch which is applied over a hole in the wood. This metal patch has been nailed over the hole, the nails being hammered down on the reverse side of the bowl, giving the impression that it has been stapled to the surface.
This is an absolutely wonderful old hand made household item, one which has been made more beautiful by its wear and repair.
