A Full Bolt of Itajime Shibori: Large Hemp Leaf Pattern
early to mid twentieth century
10 yards and 20" x 12 1/2", 9.65 m x 31.5 cmÂ
This is a full bolt of indigo dyed itajime cotton that shows an oversized pattern of the hemp leaf design.
The full bolt of 10+ yards or almost 10 meters is designed to supply enough cloth to hand stitch a full garment, in this case it would be a yukata or an unlined, casual kimono.
The cotton is of good, soft quality and although likely commercially loomed it has the feeling of hand loomed cloth. The indigo is of good, rich quality and the dyeing is sure and masterful.
The repeat being so large is visually appealing and there are countless applications for this very generous length of old, shibori dyed cotton cloth.
