A Folio of 33 Hand Drawn Designs: Kyoto Workshop
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
outside dimensions: 15 3/4" x 11 1/4", 40 cm x 28.5 cm
This wonderful collection of papers and drawings is less a folio of thematic studies than it is a hodgepodge of random works that have been bound together for safe keeping.
Mostly drawn on tissue-weight paper these thirty three drawings are in line, wash, black and white and color and they cover a wide range of subjects.
Pictured are architectural plans, traditional Japanese design motifs, landscape studies, images associated with Japanese historical literature and full-page line drawings of everyday objects, among others.
Peppered throughout this collection of studies are some images that give pause as you realize the skilled hand and the superb technique that the artist of this anonymous collection possessed.
A fascinating group.
