A Densely Sashiko Stitched Hanten: Reversible
mid twentieth century
shoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 35 1/2" x 48", 90 cm x 122 cm
This is a generously-sized hanten or jacket that is made of two layers of cotton which have been densely sashiko stitched together.
Shown in the lead photos here is the proper inside of the hanten and it is here that you can see the stitching clearly.
When the proper outside of the coat is seen it is clear that the woven stripes were used as a guide for the vertically-oriented stitches and interesting that the stitches appear as small dots within the striped fabric.
Note as well there is stitched reinforcement to the neck area which indicates that this jacket might have been destined to be used for outside work. As it is now, however, the jacket is in seemingly unused condition.
It is a very good-looking jacket and one that is quite wearable as it is to be admired for its beauty or used for inspiration. The shape of the sleeves and the narrow cuff might be an issue for some who wish to wear this as a jacket, however.
