A Dark Toned Sakiori Obi: Rich Deep Colors
mid twentieth century
116" x 7", 294.5 cm x 18 cm
This is a deeply colored, subtly striped sakiori obi, which is a traditional, rustic kimono sash that is made using shredded cloth as its weft yarn.
The cotton warp yarns on this obi are black in color. The weft yarns--thin, shredded rags--are murky shades of deeply toned browns, greys, and blips of light colored rag. The black warp yarns mute the color of the weft fill and gives a rich color tone to obi.
There are the fringes at both of its short ends.
This hand woven sakiori obi is in very good condition, with no visible holes or stains, and it is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.
A beautifully colored, beautifully woven folk textile.
